Deciding which hotel took time and patience ?

We are regular travellers who use Trip adviser to find hotels.

After reading Florence hotel reviews the Davanatzi sounded good , except we are aged in our thirties !

For younger ones , this hotel ranked No.2 would probably be fair ,as it has all those steps and it is well located with lots of action and noise all around ! If you want to rage and drink and socialise all night !

We wanted to do more sightseeing of museums and touring ,thus, needed sleep, which we did not get at this hotel, so we moved out.

We carefully researched other options , and discovered Hotel Boticelli,

ranked down at number 52 .!

It is also only 3 stars ,and was centrally located also only 5 minutes from the Duomo.

For hotels here, you need to request a room at the back , as there are many bars on every street. This hotel had no street at the back, so that part was quiet and we slept liked perfectly. Also the Boticelli hotel amenities and staff were excellent

There are heaps of other hotels here, so, be specific of your requirements when you book, because being at he top of Trip Advisers ranking ,I now discovered, does not mean the hotel will be good for everyone.

I might say, this is the first occasion TA has let us down !

On this trip ,we used the No.1 ranking hotel in Istanbul , Goreme, and

Ghent , so far and hey we're all good

We stayed at Davanzati last summer..If you are searching hotels with the help of TA you should have known that there are stairs there..And also we did not encounter any noise at all while being there and we had a room facing the street and also near the breakfast-happy hour room..

We also do a bit of traveling, and we frequently look at TA and factor in what we find.

Very often we get terrific information - about pluses and minuses.

I make sharp distinctions between what I see in the "Reviews" section and what I see in the "Forum" section.

By and large, the reviews are not subject to "peer review" the way

forum posts frequently are.

It should not be surprising that some reviews are obviously posted by "shills" working for somebody in the business. It is not overly difficult for the ratings in the review section to be manipulated by hotels, restaurants, gelaterie, even the "things to do". I am not, for a moment, suggesting that all are - but some are, and that is a fact that TA readers should be aware of.

Like quite a few other people, we more or less throw out the top and bottom reviews and focus on those well inside the margin. We also look for attention to details - minutiae that rarely show up in "reviews" by shills.

At any rate, there is still a huge amount of valuable information on TA - you just cannot take everything at face value.

Many, many hotels in Florence are noisy at night. Some people are heavy sleepers and so it won't bother them, rooms in the back are often quieter. I never go without earplugs.

I have stayed at the Davanzati twice and I am going to stay there again in February (my third time). Unless it has changed I never noticed any raging. As for noise ...my room faced Porta Rossi and never heard anything out of the ordinary. The Davanzati is a terrific hotel. It is close to everything with a wonderful staff. I found the Davanzati on TA and as I said this is my third time to Florence and I would never stay anyplace else.

Dpranne, you are a very lucky woman if you can sleep overlooking Via Porta Rossa :o)

I never take any notice of how an establishment is ranked on the review lists. For one thing, the reasons people seem to rave over the Davanzati are not reasons which I would find important.

I also think in some cases there is an element of "The King's New Clothes" involved in both good and bad reviews of hotels and restaurants.

ladybraknell, Maybe I was happy to be in Florence I did not even hear the noise. :)

At any rate I really did not have any complaints about the Davanzati. I was very happy and did not even think about the steps.
