family holiday in April

hi - my family of 4 (mum, dad and 2 kids) will be in Italy in April. We will be travelling by train and want to spend some time in both Rome and Venice. As a break from the big cities, we would like to spend a week in a smaller town in self catering accommodation so we can relax and enjoy Italian life.

Would Cortona be a good location?

Is it easy to get to by train?

Any recommendations on apartments?

thanks for any help you can give

I think Cortona would be a lovely choice for a week. You could stay inside the town, or just outside it. You would need a car to get around to see other things in the area (there's lots to see, like Pienza and Montepulciano and the thermal baths at Rapolano); cortona has free parking just outside the city walls, it's not far to anything inside the walls from there.

Although it is not far from the free parking to anywhere inside the walls, it is very steep. Cortona has almost nothing that is level, and is not a good place if anyone in your party has mobility problems.
