Wine Estates

We are getting married about 20 mins from Cortona in Fiona Della Chiana and are looking for some local wine tasting estates where we can taste and buy local red/white and sparkling wine can anyone recommend some places they may have visited close to Cortona

Cortona is not wine country. There are very few areas in Tuscany - none of them near Cortona - that produce white wine. As far as I know, there is no sparkling wine at all produced in Tuscany.

You do not want a wine estate. You want a wine shop or enoteca. There is one in Cortona.

Please don't tell the producers of the Bianco Vergine della Valdichiana that Cortona is not wine country!!!

Cortona was once a very popular and highly rated wine producing area and its wines both red and white were favoured by Popes and nobilty.

During the Napoleonic times they even took some of Cortonas wines to France to use in the making of Champagne when they had a vine plague!!

There was a break in the wine tradition in the area due to bad soil conditions when the grounds became swamped.

However, today many producers are still to be found in the Cortona region.

Here are justa few websites to look at:

www.cantinefaralli.com only 20 kms from Cortona and produces a white called White Relax and also a White Toscana IGT.

www.giannonifabbri.it Produces the traditional reds from the area but also Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

www.viticavalieri.it Does a nice Bianco Toscano and the famous Valdichiano White.

www.avignonesi.it On their Estate called La Selva they also do a Chardonnay and a Sauvignon Blanc.

Of course you are never far from good wines in Cortona and can travel easily and short distances to visit some of Tuscany's most famous vines.

I am sure your wedding day will not be a dry one.

Good luck and hope all goes well for you.

You could even arrange a coach to take your guests on a visit to some of the cantinas.

Always goes down well as a pre or after wedding celebration.

Check out Avignonesi Winery. They have a website. They are right outside Cortona near Montepulciano. We did a cellar tour and lunch with food/wine pairings. It was amazing! The property is beautiful too. Food was excellent...oh and the wine was amazing too!
