With only half a day you're not going to see much and while it's certainly possible to walk you don't have time to waste. We walked from the ship to the cathedral and the palace (about two miles, but part of it uphill), stopped for lunch and visited a couple of churches and the mercato. By that time we were pretty wiped out (it was October but still plenty warm) so we took a taxi back to the ship.

In your case I think I'd take a taxi right from the port to the furthest point you're interested in seeing and walk back.

Thanks for that. Will look at map for points of interest and taxis as will be too hot to walk too far i guess.

Palermo is a fantastic port, because you can so easily walk the historic centre.

Everything in the historic centre is easily reached from the port on foot.

It's flat!!!

There's also a free shuttle service.

If you have specific attractions in mind, then it's important to consult websites for schedules, and then plan accordingly.

Were you refereeing the Cathedral Church of Monreale, or Palermo elstravels as the Cattedrale di Palermo is not a challenging walk from the port at all.

Palermo, certainly not Monreale. It wasn't a difficult walk but we did use a cab to get back after a full day of walking and (to be honest) eating.

Thanks for responding back elstravels.

Surely a taxi would save time. It isn't a difficult walk at all, and flat.

The eating for sure! :-)

Just looked and we there for a day. Is there enough in palermo to see including markets without going on a trip outside palermo? Thanks

Absolutely! You could spend several days and not exhaust all that Palermo has to offer. After my first visit (a cruise ship day stop) I've been back a couple of times for longer stays.

Yes, Palermo is a treasure trove with the most to see and do in all Sicily.

And Palermo is a convenient port stop as you can walk from the port to the historic centre.
