Can I see Catania, Taormina, Mt Etna, Stromboli in 5 days?

Ciao everyone,

My husband and I are trying to book a trip to Catania for my birthday. We would fly in on May 16 for 5 nights. As we fly in quite late on the first night, we plan to stay in Catania. For the next days:

Day 1 - Full Day trip to Mount Etna using a guide.

QUESTION: Does anyone know any tour guides which will drop us off in Taormina with our luggage after our full day trip to Mt Etna? We plan to stay in Taormina.

Day 2 - Travel up to Milazzo to get ferry to Stromboli. Do the Stromboli hike and stay in Stromboli

Day 3 - Take ferry back to Milazzo and make our way down to Syracuse.

Day 4 - Spend the day in Syracuse and make way back to Catania.

Day 5 - Spend the day in Catania, fish markets, etc, and then fly out at 4pm.

Can anyone see if the schedule is too hectic? We want to two days of strenuous activity (Mt Etna and Stromboli) and leave the other three days for more relaxed sightseeing and perhaps a day at the beach.

I would be grateful for any help to this itinerary.

Thanks.

Welcome to Sicily ozTravelGirl!

Contact Legendary Sicily for your Etna trek.

http://www.legendarysicily.com/

If you’d like to visit Rifugio Sapienza and take the funivia, but not really trek, a driver would suffice.

http://www.newtravelservices.net/

You could hire a driver from Catania, but join the alpine guide on the mountain.

Società Cooperativa Gruppo Guide Alpine Etna Sud

http://www.etnaguide.com/

And finally you could store your luggage at the train station in Catania, take the AST bus from Catania to Etna, join the alpine guides for a long trek, return to Catania, collect your luggage, and then move onward to Taormina via public transport or a driver.

This isn’t an efficient itinerary – There’s no reason to see Catania twice. See Catania the day after your arrival or at the end of your itinerary, but not at the beginning and end. With a departing flight at 16.00, you can easily arrive at the airport from Siracusa or Taormina.

You could hire a transfer and spend your first night in Taormina, and then take the Etna excursion from Taormina.

You could also begin in Siracusa, then see Taormina or Stromboli, and end in Catania.

Happy Birthday!

2. Re: Can I see Catania, Taormina, Mt Etna, Stromboli in 5 days?

Thank you Vagabonda for your tips! After reading your post and doing further research, we have decided to hire a car (on the to-do list!) and travel as follows:

Day 0 - Arrive 22:30 at Catania airport, hire car and drive to Taormina

Day 1 - Spend a few hours in the morning exploring Taormina. Drive further up to Milazzo so that we can take a boat to Stromboli (do the afternoon hike with magmatrek, and stay the night on Stromboli)

Day 2 - Return to Milazzo, and drive back to Taormina. Spend the late afternoon exploring more of Taormina

Day 3 - Drive to Etna and take cable car/jeep. Drive to Ortigia and stay the night.

Day 4 - Explore Ortigia and perhaps some beaches near Siracusa. Drive to Catania.

Day 5 - Explore Fish markets, and other parts of Catania, return car at 3:30pm at airport and fly out at 4:40pm.

Some further questions if anyone can help:

1) Can we park our car in Milazzo port for free while we explore Stromboli overnight?

2) How much are the tolls if we were to hire a car?

Thanks !!

This is a whirlwind itinerary! :-)

Avoid driving in Catania – Park or return the car at Catania’s airport and then take the AMT Alibus 457 from the airport to the city.

Beware your unattended left luggage!

Leaving car with luggage at carpark at Valley of the Temples:

Yes, park the car at the Garage delle Isole during your time on Stromboli.

All sorted ozTravelGirl – Best wishes for a wonderful holiday!

Actually we decided to stay two nights in Ortigia after speaking to our Italian friends recently. We will only be in Catania for the fish market / antica marina restaurant just before we leave in the late afternoon. At least the last two nights will be in the same place :-)

Thanks for the tip about the leaving the car at Catania airport!

We're all set! So excited!! :-)

That's a much better plan and you'll enjoy a full day in Siracusa.

Catania's fish market and lunch at Antica Marina is a perfect ending to your time in Sicily!

All the best -
