Suggestions on Itinerary

Hi all, we are heading to Sicily for 18 days towards the end of July, we have only booked Palermo for three nights so far and we fly out of Catania. Any thoughts on the below plan? Wondering if we are moving around too much or what we may have missed. We will rent a car when we leave Palermo.

Right now we thinking

3 nights Palermo

Pick up rental car

2 nights Cefalu

3 nights west coast ( Trapani area)

1 night Agrigento

3 Syracusa or Baroque towns

4 nights Taormina ( is that too much?)

2 nights Catania

Any suggestions appreciated. We don’t want to move too much but it appears we are set up that way.

Hey folks, would love to hear any thoughts. Thinking we should cut number of hotel changes. Thanks so much.

hi...we went to Sicily October 2014 for 15 days and had a great trip....i'm sure destination expert Vagabonda will reply and help guide your ideas. I have a few observations:

Your pace 3-2-3-1-3-4-2 moves along but is okay....consider perhaps a slightly different allocation and order in some locations....2(Cefalu)-3(Palermo)-3(Trapani)-1(Agrigento)-4(Ortigia)-3(Taormina)-2(Catania).

I feel going from Palermo to Cefalu and then back the other way again over to Trapani is awkward. Why not consider this...arrive Palermo, take shuttle bus into train station and head over to Cefalu for 1.5 days/2 nights. Then take the train to Palermo for 2.5 days/3 nights, go to the airport and pick up your rental car and head to Trapani for 2.5 days/3 nights, with day trip to Erice via funicular. Head to Agrigento for 1/2 day/1 night, then over to Ortigia for 3.5 days/4 nights with day trip Modica, day trip Piazza Armerina--although I'm not sure if P. Amerina is too long of a trip for one day. Then head to Taormina for 2.5 days/3 nights and finally drop car off at Catania airport and take bus into the city for 1.5 days/2 nights. If you have no desire to visit Catania, take one of those nights and enrich your time in Palermo or stretch out in Cefalu.

Ortigia is the picturesque old town of Siracuse and I highly recommend staying in this pretty waterfront location. You can walk over to Siracuse via a little bridge. Parking is in the Talete lot.

Do be aware of the restrictions for driving in Italy & Sicily...and especially what the ZTL zones mean. If you are not informed and attentive, hefty fines will result. Briefly, one can not drive into any historic city or village center and parking is highly regulated. Cameras enforce infractions...as an aside, you will not wish to drive in Palermo or Catania. Also, do not leave luggage visible in the car, not even in the trunk. Always head to lodging first, unload and then go out and explore.

Thanks Chester for the reply! Appreciate the advice on where to spend our time. We have been warned about the tourist zone restrictions for cars, almost got burned by that in Florence on a previous trip trying to return rental car at train station.

Depending on your intentions in Trapani, you might begin in Trapani on arrival, then see Palermo, and then take the train to Cefalù, and collect the car when departing Cefalù.

Then see Agrigento, Siracusa, and Taormina.

Consider more time in Ortigia, even if Siracusa isn't a beach destination, and so summer isn't high season in Siracusa, but then enjoy the beaches south of town.
