First time in Puglia. Where to stay in early October?

Apologies for yet another question where to stay, but I couldn't find a right post for our situation.

We'll be traveling from Rome by car to Puglia end of September - beginning of October. The total stay in the Puglia region will be 5-6 nights.

We'll do day trips, but would love to be based in seaside town with nice beaches (hopefully the water will still be warm) and good restaurants within walking distance, so we don't have to drive after dinner.

Will be open to staying in more than one place if it makes more sense.

Also, would appreciate the ideas where to stop on a way from/to Rome.

Thank you for your help

Hi,

If you can, you should consider stopping in Alberobello or Ostuni on your way. If you really want to swim, the beaches in and around Gallipoli are beautiful sandy beaches and there are plenty of great restaurants nearby. It won't necessarily be "beach weather" (at least not by local standards), so if you want to just stay near the coast you can consider the south eastern coast. It has more cliffs, but the views are amazing. You can really stay anywhere in Salento and go to a different town or beach everyday if you will have your own car. Be sure to check out the centro storico of Lecce, Gallipoli and/or Otranto if you are interested in Baroque architecture. Also, the marina in Leuca is a great place for a day trip and a boat tour. Also, if you're going to stay in Puglia, why not stay in a uniquely Apulian house like a trullo? https://www.flipkey.com/properties/7118653/ Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at Masseria Montenapoleone in Pezze Di Greco and it was a delightful place to stay and a great location for touring Puglia by car. We were there end of September and beginning of October and the area is really quiet with the season over. There were no beach clubs open and many restaurants were closed. It was rather drizzly and chilly, yet humid. We LOVED Puglia but I wish there had been a little more action. Btw this was 4 years ago. We are going back in early September this year to stay in Salento. Do not miss Matera if you have time.

Sorry, forgot to say that ideally a night in Matera before Puglia would be perfect. We took the train from Florence to Naples and picked up a car then drove to Matera and spent 3 nights there. Then drove to Puglia for a week before dropping the car in Bari to get a flight back to CA. In Matera get a quide to tour the Sassi. The roads were easy to drive. Be sure to have GPS.

I can recommend Gallipoli. Beautiful old city, nice beaches to the South.

Thank you everyone for all your help. Will probably spend some time in Matero, Galvani, around Osteni (depending on masseurs will find) and either Lecce or Gallipoli.

Will Lecce or Gallipoli better for dinners and parking when staying overnight (end of September early October)?

Thank you again
