Day Trips from Bolzano

I intend to visit Bolzano from either Milan or Venice over the Christmas. I will be likely to base in in Bolzano and do the following day trips:

a) Bolzano to Vipiteno

b) Bolzano to Merano

c) Bolzano to Brixen

d) Bolzano to Castelrotto

e) Bolzano to Trento

f) Bolzano to Ortisei ( Selvai + Val Gatdena + S Cristina)

My Questions will be:

1) Are the day trips doable? Can I combine any of those?

2) Is there any card or pass that include all the transport using regional train and buses?

3) Which area is suitable for an easy to moderate hike? I will not any hiking equipment’s. Can it be rent over there?

4) Which city is easier to travel to Bolzano? Milan or Venice?

Thanks in advance

If you're travelling without a car, I would recommend you stick to the major cities only. Connections to smaller villages like Ortisei, Vipiteno and Castelrotto can be hard to find. There is no train usually, only coaches and they are not that frequent.

For any hike during Christmas time you will definitely need snowshoes, which I think you can rent at any ski rental. I am not very sure that any hike with snowshoes can be considered moderate though...

You can travel to Bolzano just as easily from Venice or Milan, there are trains from both stations, but Venice is closer.

When you say "over Christmas", what dates do you mean?

Bolzano, Brixen and Sterzing all have nice Christmas Markets that are open until early January.all are relatively easy to get to from Bolzano. You may like Meran/Merano also.

Hello,

all of those places are "doable" from Bolzano as day trips - most by train, Castelrotto and Ortisei/Val Gardena by direct bus. Buy a MobilCard (http://www.mobilcard.info/en/mobilcard.asp) to cover most if not all of your transport.

As other posters have said, the possibility for hikes will depend on the snow conditions. This winter there wasn't much natural snow on the ground at Christmas so walks would have been possible using just stout boots. The year before you'd have needed snowshoes and huskies! I guess it's just a case of wait and see when you get here.

I hope this helps,

DD

Appreciate your replies.

@Anna M

I am travelling without a car. I will skip Castelrotto and Ortisei since the bus are not frequent and I believe it will be very crowded too.

@Libo

Thanks for the information. Definitely will visit Vipiteno.

@Pja60

Thanks for the names and tentatively my dates is 23rd Dec to 27th Dec
