Milan to Ljubljana - late November

Hi everyone

What is the best mode(s) of travel from Milan to Ljubljana in late November?

I searched on net and found that Trenitalia runs trains from Milan-Venezia-Trieste-Ljubljana, but no booking is possible on Trieste-Ljubljana route. Does anyone know why?

If I travel by Trenitalia from Milan to Trieste, which is the best/reliable bus service(s) to travel from Trieste to Ljubljana?

Travel by Flixbus for 8 hours from Milan to Ljubljana is too much for me. I would prefer Train(s) (may be with one or two stops) or Train(s)+bus.

Any and every lead/help in this regard would be appreciated.

Thanks

Use trenitalia to book as far as Trieste then buy a train or bus ticket in Trieste for your onwards journey to Ljubljana. ap-ljubljana.si for buses. The bus and train stations in Trieste are a few steps apart.

For the times of trains from Trieste to Ljubljana (Lubiana in Italian) click Orari dei Servizi on trenitalia.com/tcom/Treni-Regionali/Friuli-V… Buy tickets in Trieste, they cannot sell out.

These trains have only been running a few months, and Trenitalia's website has not yet been amended to show them. And may never be, as it does not show trans-frontier Regional trains to Switzerland either, and these have been running for years. The problem is that fare systems either side of the borders are not the same.

For buses from Trieste, click Lines to Slovenia then lines to Lubiana on https:/…internazionali

Quite a number of different people on Tripadvisor forums have used the GoOpti transfer service that can take you to Ljubljana. Just use the forum search box and search for "goopti", and you can also do that search on the Tripadvisor Slovenia Forum [ https:/…ShowForum-g274862-i501-Slovenia.html ]; or you can read the 500 reviews on the Tripadvisor GoOpti Ljubljana page [ https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Revie… ] and there's a "Question & Answers" section at the bottom of that page. I have no connection to GoOpti - just what I've seen before on the forum.

www.trenitalia.com, book Milan-Trieste.

Trains link Trieste Centrale with Ljubljana twice a day, €8, buy at station, cannot sell out. The trains are modern, air-conditioned, power sockets at seats, accessible toilet, bike spaces. Bring food & drink along.

09:01 from Trieste arriving Ljubljana 11:36

19:09 from Trieste arriving Ljubljana 21:48

There are two key things to look out for: The Trieste-Ljubljana train runs non-stop through Prosecco station (yes, Prosecco is a place!) soon after leaving Trieste. And near Ljubljana is runs around a valley at Borovnica and there used to be a viaduct here with a story to tell, https:/…Borovnica_Viaduct and https:/…History - you see, journeys aren't just transportation, they are part of the experience! ;0)

You'll have to look quite carefully to see Prosecco station. It's been closed for seven years and the platforms are covered in grass.
