Day trip from Stresa (to Switzerland?) in October?

Can anyone recommend a good day trip from Stresa, perhaps to Switzerland? We won't have a car. Any recommended train/bus/boat journeys? (apart from the Borromean Islands and Alpino Mottarone). Any good tour companies for a guided excursion?

TTry the boat up the lake from Stresa to Locarno. Switzerland is a bit different, the town is large compared to Stresa, and worth a visit. I believ there is a hydrofoil from Stresa which is the quickest boat journey.

We have an apartment in Stresa, so know the area very well, although we do recommend a car.

Another trip is to Lago d'Orta, another lake closeby. There are arranged trips (see the tourist offices).

Hope this helps.

If you want to go to Switzerland there are a few options. The first is a day coach tour to Zermatt in the Swiss Alps. The tour runs twice a week on Tuesday or Friday. Leaves at 07.30am. The scenery en-route is fabulous, via the simplon pass. You have about 3 hours in Zermatt.

Another option is the Centovalli railway. Train from Stresa to Domodossola, then on the narrow-gauge railway through the "painter's valley" to Locarno. A few hours in Locarno then back to Stresa on the Boat.
