Free shuttle bus from Genoa airport?

Just been researching the bus timetables from the airport to the city centre and I notice the airport has this message on its website:

SP" FREE SHUTTLE BUS

AMT and the Municipality of Genoa, in order to facilitate the mobility of citizens to/from the airport, introducted an additional special bus service between Principe Piazza Acquaverde and Sestri Ponente (Via Hermada), with transit, in both directions, in Genoa Airport (Arrivals area, ground floor). Frequency: 15 minutes. Service is operational from 6.00 a.m. to 8.00 p.m. The service is free.

https:/…

Has anyone used this service recently and is it relaible?

One person posting on this forum used this service to Sestri Ponente recently.

You will not find many people active on the forum have used the service, as it was only introduced in mid-August after the collapse of the bridge on the autostrada. I see no reason why it should not be reliable, but traffic congestion following the bridge collapse is the reason why it was introduced, and this may well effect time-keeping.

Thank you for the info. We are staying at the Grand Hotel Savoia for one night before a cruise so fortunately we are not on a tight time schedule so will probably take the free bus offered.

What a terrible tragedy the bridge collapse was. My heart goes out to all those affected.

As the bus to Piazza Principe train station in Piazza Acquaverde terminates in the same piazza as your hotel, the bus would be ideal.

It's about a fifteen minutes walk from Piazza Acquaverde to your B&B.

While you can reduce the walking time from Piazza Acquaverde slightly by taking another bus, it'd still be over ten minutes walk in total and the total journey time including waiting for the bus is likely to be rather longer than simply walking directly the B&B. The 'roads' around your B&B are not wide enough for buses, and Genoa's one-way system means you cannot take a suitable bus directly from Piazza Acquaverde.

landing at Genoa airport tomorrow, taking the free shuttle bus to the train station, staying in Rapello. Do we need to go to the Principe station to get a train to Rapello?

You have a choice. You can take the free bus one way on the shorter journey to Genova Sestri Ponente Aeroporto train station then a Regional train to Rapallo, or the other way to Genova Piazza Principe station from where there are also more expensive but faster Frecce and Intercity trains to Rapallo.

I just used the free bus yesterday. Some things to be aware of:

It makes many local stops and is very busy so if you have a lot of luggage the busses are not really designed for carrying large cases and you will most likely have to stand. It does get very crowded. However it's free and eventually drops off outside Principe station so if you don't mind a little inconvenience it's a useful service.

If you don't want to use the free bus, the Volabus (€6) through to Genova Brignole is still running, and is a dedicated airport shuttle with only one rarely used stop on the way to Piazza Principe and with luggage storage under rhe bus. If taking this, I'd take it all the way to Genova Brignole station and take the train to Rapallo from there.
