Are shops in Rome open on easter ??

i am thinking of visiting Rome this weekend and i was wondering wether the shops are open during this easter weeken (including Friday)

i also checked out hotel rates, it seems very expensive. Is it because of the weekend or rates are high in Rome?

Higher rates due to holiday and, yes, too because it is Rome.

Check www.venere.com for lodging; you can sort there by budget.

I would deal with your chosen hotel directly regarding a better rate than on offer at venere. Lots of deals can be done in Rome at the moment.

All shops, supermarkets, department stores etc will be open over the weekend, keeping their usual hours. The exception is Easter Monday which is the only Easter Public Holiday in Italy.

Actually, both Easter Sunday and Monday are holidays, although Easter Sunday is not called so, because in Italy Sunday is always a "giorno festivo". The transportation schedules for both Easter Sunday and Easter Monday will be on the holiday (festivo) schedule.

The shops that are closed on Easter Monday will almost certainly also be closed on Easter Sunday. Sunday is normally a mandatory shop closing day, but the law allows exceptions for shops in tourist locations, and for a few specific categories of shop. At the moment a new law is proposed that will allow all shops to remain open on Sundays if they like, but there is resistance to this law from the smaller shops that are run by families, with no employees.
