It's not easy. There is a train station but it's actually five miles from the town, so you'd need transport (bus or taxi) from the station into town. To do this you'd take the Alibus from the airport to Napoli Centrale, then a train to Formia-Gaeta. The train trip is 50 minutes on an IC or an hour and a quarter on a regionale.
Cotral runs the buses from the station to Gaeta: http://servizi.cotralspa.it/Orari
This might seem a silly question but do you know where we buy tickets for the bus from the airport, and then for the train from Naples? Presumably the railway station is obvious. Do we buy bus tickets in the airport somewhere and is it obvious where to get the bus from?
The Alibus is one of the very few in Italy that you can purchase the ticket on the bus, for the same price as anywhere else.
You'll get the train ticket at the station. Check the schedules before buying, often a later departing IC train will get you there earlier then the next regionale. The IC is more expensive (€10,50 vs. €5,10 for the regionale) but it's still a bargain.
Check times at www.trenitalia.com
The primary benefit of the IC vs. the regionale isn't the time savings, although there is that, it's the greater comfort (even in second class, which is perfectly adequate) and having an assigned seat. There are no reserved seats on a regionale. Also the ICs make only one stop along the way while the regionales make seven.
Thanks so much that's really helpful!! Where to buy tickets is where we always go wrong backwards and forwards trying to work it out as our Italian isn't good and we are so British and reserved and too shy to ask!!
I feel much more confident now thank you :-)
There are multi-language kiosks at Napoli Centrale as well as a manned booth. If you're unsure about your language skills you can print out the list of trains for several hours after your arrival time and take that with you, then when you get to the station you can simply point to the one you want when you go to the booth, or look for that particular train at the kiosk.
On another thread someone suggested using google maps and street view to see the interior of Napoli Centrale, I knew they'd photographed it but had never actually looked until today and it's amazing. You can see the ticket office as well as the ticket machines in the hall in front of the office, play around with it a bit and you'll see what I mean.
Brilliant thanks so much!! I'll have a look and have already printed the timetable so what a good idea to show the ticket office :-)
