Need for Advance train tickets from Rome?

We want to visit Pompeii April 28 or 29. We will use all the helpful information on how to get there and what to see for our self-guided tour found in this forum.

Do we need to but advance tickets for this day trip from Rome or can we purchase the day of our trip? Is there an advantage in cost to early train purchases or buying tickets online?

Thanks!

You'll be able to get your tickets the day of travel with no problem. If on the slim chance a train is sold out, just take the next one which will likely be within the hour.

If you purchase 24 hours or more in advance, you may be able to get the Amica fare, which is a 20% discount available for a limited number of seats.

That info applies only to the train from Rome to Naples. You'll have to switch to the Circumvesuviana there, which is a local commuter train.

Hi -

There have been some big changes with trenitalia - there now are discounts for booking in advance - and it appears that they are going to accept foreign credit cards - I'm not sure whether this has happened, but it might have.

Go to the web site and check out the special offers. There is a discount for online purchasing, and other offers to be considered.

All this presumes that the new improved Trenitalai web site will now take credit cards that were issued from a foreign non-Italian bank. There are no reliable posts that this is true.

Thanks for the information.

Looking at Trenitalai web site is a bit of a headache. We will be in Florence for three days before Rome, could we buy the advance tickets from the train station there.

You can buy train tickets from anywhere to anywhere at any train station in Italy or at any travel agency showing the Trenitalia logo.

Be aware that tickets for the fast trains from Rome to Naples incude seat reservations and are only valid for the train for which they are issued. They can be changed, but it's a hassle.

Do not buy Trenitalia tickets from Rome to Pompeii, as the Trenitalia station in Pompeii is some distance from the excavations.

Go by Trenitalia from Rome to Naples. At Naples station, head for the far left corner for the Circumvesuviana train in the basement. Get a suburban ticket, get onto a train heading for Sorrento, and get off at Pompeii Scavi. This station is about 100 yards from the excavations.

Sidneynik is correct. here is a google map of Pompei

maps.google.com/maps/ms…

Pompei Scavi Circumvesuviana stop is the red cross on the map It right by the Porta Marina gate of Pompeii that most of the sites that people who come to Pompeii want to see.

The trentalia station is the blue trolley marker on it's side. Your can enter Pompeii from this side at the Amphitheater gate (red circle with a squiggle marker), and there are sights to see on that side, but it is a 20 min walk on the uneven pavement to the western sdie of Pompeii with most of the major sights and the only bathrooms on the site
