Sorrento or Naples

We head for the Amalfi coast at the end of October we want to do all the usual sights but cannot decide whether to stay in Naples for first and last nights (early flights) and Sorrento for 4 nights or just use Naples as a base and do the sights while stopping there , bit concerned Sorrento may be a bit 'end of season' and so closed up a little ? Any helpful thoughts welcome

Thanks Chris

For 4 nights probably Naples. But you could stay in both 2 days each as well but depends on what you want to do in either place.

When you say do the Amalfi Coast sights, what do you want to see?

I found the time it took to get from Naples to Positano for example was a fair chunk out of a day (Campagnia Express to Sorrento, then bus to Positano) - I would not want to be doing day trips to the Amalfi Coast from Naples, unless you wanted to hire a private driver. If the ferries still run, all good, but do check if they do in October, as not all services will continue.

If all the things you want to see are on the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is your better choice. Pompeii is certainly very easy from there too.

I loved Naples and loved all the sites there, but it is a bit of a slog if you want to see the Amalfi Coast in particular.

You can get to the Amalfi Coast from Naples if you take a train to Salerno and then use the (seasonal) ferry services from Salerno along the coast.
