Sorrento to Paestum by public transport?

I will be in Sorrento next month. Would love to go to Paestum, but I am an old age pensionner, cannot hire a limo for the day.

Can you get to Paestum by public transport, and how?

Thanks for your help

Most of the local tour companies do day trips to Paestum, also visiting Salerno, not very expensive, to go on public transport would not be straight forward,

It is possible by train.

From Sorrento to Castellammare di Stabia. Change to Salerno. Then change to Paestum. You have to look up Trenitalia website on separate sections to get a connection as these are commuter trains.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking of taking the train to Naples, then there is a train from Naples to Paestum.

The Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station is around 1/2 a mile or so from the Castellammare di Stabia FS Train Station. You could walk outside the Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station to the ocean and follow the road bordering the ocean until you reach the Castellammare di Stabia FS Train Station. In making the transfer, you might be able to catch a taxi which might be outside the Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station. There's a local bus called the red bus(#1 rosso) which seems to go up toward the mountains than to the other train station. No trains leave for Salerno from the Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station:

You might consider taking a Circumvesuviana Train to Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri. Then you could take a local city bus for €1(should be waiting right across the street from the Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri Circumvesuviana Train Station) to the Pompei FS Train Station. From the Pompei FS Train Station, you can catch a local train to Paestum. When you reach Paestum, you can walk straight out of the train station toward the ancient looking arch/gate and down the road for around 5-10 minutes. You'll see the temples, restaurants, the museum, and many souvenir shops when you reach the temple site. As Sophie8 mentioned, taking a private tour bus is nice.

If you find that the train connections back from Paestum to Salerno aren't convenient, you can also consider taking one of many public or private buses from Paestum to Salerno:

Then you can take a train from the Salerno FS Train Station to Pompei FS Train Station. You can wait for the Pompei city bus (flag the driver when you see the bus) to the Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri Circumvesuviana Train Station. You could also consider taking a bus from Salerno to Pompei:

The advantage of stopping at Pompei Scavi/Villa Circumvesuviana Train Station instead of the Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station is that the former offers 3 ways to reach its city's FS Train Station: taxi, city bus, #4 CSTP bus. The two times I stopped at the Castellammare di Stabia Circumvesuviana Train Station, I didn't see any waiting taxis in the piazza and lost patience waiting for the #1 rosso which stops in front of the Circumvesuviana Train Station and heads up to the scavi up on the hill instead of heading to the Castellammare FS Train Station. Two other advantages for stopping in Pompei Scavi/Villa dei Misteri Circumvesuviana Train Station is that many local vendors speak some English, and in general, the area has many tourists who fill the area near the Scavi and downtown Pompei near the Pompei FS Train Station.

You might consider buying a day pass from Sorrento to Paestum at the Sorrento Circumvesuviana Train Station. Otherwise, you might buy a ticket for Paestum from the Sorrento Circumvesuviana Train Station and then hope that the tobacconist at Paestum will be open to sell you a ticket back from Paestum to Sorrento. For any private buses which you take from Paestum to Salerno such as Stromillo, Giuliano, or SCAT, you need to pay the driver as bus tickets are not valid.

Buona Fortuna...
