Visiting the wine country

Hello,

Looking for a few good suggestions of winery's to visit in Penedes and Priorat. We are a group of 4 couples stay in Sitges for 7 days. Is driving easy to these areas? Is finding petrol stations easy? Are the tolls cash only and how much. We are very familiar with California's wine country is it similar to them? And last question what is some of your favorite wines from this region?

Thank you and Cheers ..Salut!

As far as wine is concerned - a visit to Torres Winery is fun, as well as visits to Freixenet and Codorniu. Freixenet is in San Sadorni itself (about half an hour's drive from Sitges) -very near the railway station - and Codorniu is on the other side of the town, on the edge, with fabulous views of Montserrat.

Freixenet and Codorniu are the biggest produces of Cava (Spanish 'champagn'). They both do tours of their production process. Codorniu is my favourite - especially the train ride through the cellars! Both Freixenet and Codorniu are easy to get to by car on the A7 toll road. The toll is only a few euros. Driving is easy and there are plenty of petrol stations. There are literally dozens of other cava producers in San Sadorni, but the 2 above are the biggest..

Torres is a bit more difficult to get to, but easy enough with your own transport. Check out their web site for directions / sat nav. Torres does an outside tour of the vineyards on a little train.

You don't say when you will be there for your anniversary. Presuming it's some time in the summer months, I reckon the most romantic setting of any restaurant in Sitges is El Xalet (pronounced El Shalet) - towards the top of Calle Isla de Cuba. It is set in a beautiful garden courtyard with a pool, and has a great 'chill-out' bar area: the food is also excellent!

It's absolutely necessary to book at busy times.

Can't help you with the boat, I'm afraid, though there should be info at the marina - Aiguadolç - which also has some great seafood restaurants. Also try the Tourist Information by the railway station.

Enoy Sitges!

p.s.that should say 'Enjoy'; and the tolls take cards as well as cash.

Enjoy!

Hello rfoster, I can recommend two vinyeards in the Priorat. In 2012 friends and I visited Ferrer Bobet . We had a fun/interesting guide who explained the the winery's philosophy and process. Our timing was good as the crush was in progress. The guide also brought us out into the vineyards in her jeep to show us the land and the harvesting. The tour ended with a tasting in a magnificent modern building perched on the hillside. It was a truly spectacular property (very James Bond-ish).

Our second tasting was also at an interesting though very modest winery called Les Figueres. Again we had an informative guide and this winery was on a much smaller more personal scale. After tasting we enjoyed a rather lavish lunch in their restaurant. The wines kept pouring and plates of truly delicious local food kept appearing. We all felt it was one of the best lunches we had in Spain.

Sounds like you will have a car. We used a group called Open Guide Tours and we were delighted with their service. Have fun.
