(Posted in Basque forum but posting here as well. Thanks!)
My girlfriend and I are planning a last minute trip to Spain/France for the first 2 weeks of September. We will most likely be travelling by train/bus. We are late 20s/early 30s and looking for a combination of:
1) Good food / Cafe Culture
2) Nice weather
3) a few days of beaches
4) some outdoor/active activities
5) areas that are not overly "cheesy" tourist locations (though we know this cant be totally avoided)
6) some museums
We will be coming from california and will have 11 or 12 nights.
We are thinking:
3 or 4 nights: Barcelona (maybe with a day trip or 2)
3-4 nights: San Sebastian (with day trip to Bilbao)
For the additional nights, maybe somewhere between the 2 that will be more rustic and have nice hiking/outdoor activities, but will still have quality accomodations. Or maybe stay in the north and do additional trips from there - maybe biarratz or something else nearby? Or maybe another beach destination in the south that will be more relaxed than barcelona.
Alternatively we could go to the bordeaux region after San Sebastian for a few days (instead of adding the destination between barcelona/San Sebastian).
Our flight back to the states leaves from amsterdam so we will need to get back there - can either train from bordeaux or finish our itinerary in Barcelona and fly back from there.
Any ideas would be much appreciated!!
