Gluten Free in Lanzarote

We're staying in Playa Blanca in early January with someone who cannot eat foods containing gluten. Can anyone offer advice, particularly about restaurants or shops selling guten-free food?

Many thanks

I'm a newly diagnosed celiac, so I've been paying a lot of attention to the subject of GF -- Evidently gluten intolerance is quite common in Spain - so - the first thing to do is notify your hotel kitchen staff of your celiac person. Then, ask the desk personnel to refer you to the appropriate restaurants and shops. Since it's a fairly common condition in Spain, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding the appropriate information.

Hi, we are going to Playa Blanca in February, our first trip since my husband has had to have a gluten free diet, I would be very interested to find out what you found, especially with regards to eating out, many thanks

We found the restaurants we tried in Playa Blanca very helpful. We had printed a card (found at http://www.celiactravel.com/gluten-free-cards/34-spanish.html) and when we showed it at Almacen de la Sal (by the beach - first restaurant on the right on the passageway from the town centre roundabout) the waiter knew right away what we needed. It was rather expensive although the food and the location were lovely. Later we found Tipico Espanol opposite the children's play area boat, on the road to the church. They too were able to supply gluten free food although we had to be a bit more careful. My mother (the coeliac in our party) found she was able to have quite a variety of food and never had any problems the fortnight we were there. The only other restaurant we tried was La Era in Yaiza for a celebration meal. Although they understood gluten free, there wasn't much on the menu that she could have. There were no gluten free desserts at La Era and at Tipico my mum had to choose from the extensive (Kalise) ice cream menu. At Almacen there was a better choice.

We went to Fundacion Cesar Manrique and the Cactus Garden. We found no gluten free at the first, which only had rolls at its small cafe, but the restaurant had at the garden had some suitable items on the menu.

My mum took her own gluten free bread, rolls and muesli and we bought cornflakes as well as the usual food. There are plenty of supermarkets around. We didn't find anywhere to buy specialist gluten-free food and had been previously warned of this.
