10 days in the Basque region.
Save

Hi. I am planning a 10 day trip to the Basque region in late October. My thoughts were 3 days in Bilbao, 3 days in Burgos, 2 days in Vitoria and the final 2 days in San Sebastian. Does this sound about right or am I missing out on a hidden gem or two? We are an easy-going couple who enjoy sight-seeing, walking, sampling local cuisine and just generally soaking up the atmosphere of different places. Any suggestions will be much appreciated. Thanks.

From what I can see, the tour is ok but I would stay 2 days in Burgos and 3 in Donostia.

Appart from Bilbao, there more beautiful towns close to Bilbao such as Portugalete (30´), Santurtzi(30´), Getxo(30´), Bermeo(60´), or Gernika(60´)

Maybe visit La Rioja wine region, somewhere like Laguardia or somewhere along the coast like Lekeitio or Getaria.

I agree with Pipi, I would stay 2 nights in Burgos and 3 in San Sebastian instead. From San Sebastian, you can easily visit 2 of my favorite villages in the region, both by the coast. To the west, you have Getaria (http://www.euskoguide.com/places-basque-country/spain/getaria-tourism/), famous for its white wine txakoli and for being the birth town of the famous fashion designer Balenciaga. To the east, bordering with France, you have Hondarribia (http://www.euskoguide.com/places-basque-country/spain/hondarribia-tourism/), with an outstanding culinary scene and a well-preserved medieval old town.

Spend more time in San Sebastian and French Basque country while you are there. 2 days in Bilbao are enough. 2 days in La Rioja and 1 day to see the monasteries for sure. I would skip Vitoria.
