Dresden to Vienna by train

Hi there

I am wondering if anyone can tell me how long it takes to travel by train from Dresden to Vienna. I am spending four nights in Prague from 15 Dec, then one night undecided, then three nights vienna. I'm travelling with two teenagers and am trying to decide between Cesky Krumlov and Dresden.

Would I have to travel back through Prague to get to Vienna? Is there a fast train? And, how much would train fares be - teenagers are 16 & 17 yrs.

Thanks for any advice or suggestions

Go to the German Rail website www.bahn.de and you can research rail trips for all of Europe, not just Germany. There is an English language option.

After you punch in Dresden to Vienna, click on "details" to see the intermediate stops. Prague is one of those stops.

Yes, you would need to go back to Prague as trains run (Berlin)-Dresden-Prague-Brno-Breclav-Vienna.

Until the 1940s Dresden was one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. But no other city in the 3rd Reich was so severely bombed leaving an undescribable mess. After a few years socialism (DDR) took over. It was possible to restore a few (gorgeous) landmarks like the Semper Opera or the Frauenkirche, but the grace has gone. It is still a worthwhile city, but I would not be my first choice.

By the way, Vienna was also heavily bombed but the damage wasn't as bad as in Dresden.

Cesky Krumlov is indeed an unique place, but onward transportation to Vienna may be a little bit uncomfortable. If you don't mind transportation in a minivan with others, you should consider ShuttleLobo (http://www.shuttlelobo.cz/).

What about Salzburg, the birthplace W.A. Mozart?

There are two daily (direct) trains from Prague to Salzburg Main Station. Between Salzburg and Vienna you can rely on a vast number of trains departing twice an hour.

Thanks for your advice - transportation is a bit of a problem, for both Dresden and Cesky Krumlov. I hadn't even considered Salzburg - but will look into it straight away - it sounds good.

Another query. I opened the website to check tickets and found a fast train Prague to Salzburg EC101 departing 7.14 am on 19 Dec. When I tried to go further the site reverted to German - though I understand that I need to reserve seats. What do you advise? It's hard to check availability and price with only rudimentary german.

Thanks again

No, you don´t. It´s optional.

>What do you advise? It's hard to check availability and price

Availability: always.

Price: you will be able to read a number no matter which language is around it, wouldn´t you?

There are 2 hourly EC trains between Dresden and Prague.

Actually Salzburg is no less a detour than Dresden. Esp. the connection Prague to Salzburg is quite slow.

Salzburg is as well preserved and touristy as Prague. Another nice city to look at.

Dresden has however the more interesting museums.

E.g. the Green Vault

skd-dresden.de/en/…gruenes_gewoelbe.html

or (esp. for male teenagers) you could visit the transparent factory of Volkswagen

The system differs between "Mandatory Reservation" and "Reservation recommended". In your case it is only recommended, hence absolutely not necessary in my opinion. Display of international train fare is, contrary to domestic ones, in most cases not available or complicated. I know that everyone wants know the approximate costs in advance (like me either when abroad), but as the Czech Republic is a relatively cheap country and you are from a wealthy land it should not be a thing. Just arrive at the train station and get your tickets. Or better do it the day before as the departure is quite early.
