what concentration camp is near Frankfurt that is best to se

We are trying to plan a trip that includes a trip to one of the main concentration camps in Germany. We want to do the Rhine cruise and then a camp, or should we do it in reverse? What is the best camp to see? We are sandwiching Germany between Paris and Amsterdam so we could do this going in either direction but are confused as to which way and how. I know you guys can offer the greatest of help to us as you did on our vacation through Italy! looking forward to your comments and suggestions!

What do you mean by main concentration camps? How many people had to be killed there to become a major or main one? Aren't they all just disgusting and shocking?

The largest ones were in formerly occupied Poland like Auschwitz, Treblinka, Haidanek etc.

Concentration camp (KZ) Strutthof near Natzweiler in the French region of Alsace is easily accessible from Frankfurt (about a 2 hours to 2 1/2 hrs drive). It comes with all the cruelty incl. special torture rooms and rooms for "medical exams".

thanks. i didn't think about the one in France. Yes, they are all equally as grotesque, but believe it or not they are classified as major and minor and in some case even given the title of "little". There are actually six major camps. I am sorry to say that we as a society can even begin to acknowledge a classification of this type of cruelty. The smallest is worlds too big!

Yes it is all too awful . However there is a distinction between concentration camps and extermination camps. Concentration camps (Konzentrationslager /KZ) incl. hundreds of sub-camps dependent on main camps, were set up earlier on, even before the war in some cases, and were mainly on German soil or annexed lands with German heritage such as Alsace, Austria and Bohemia. The "Extermination camps" (Vernichtungslager) to carry out "the final solution" were on Polish soil.

The nearest to Frankfurt in Germany is probably Buchenwald near Weimar.

In Amsterdam do go to the Versetzmuseum (Resistance Museum) which is excellent (and shows you there was little resistance in the Netherlands in fact).
