Can't Decide - Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg?

Heading to Berlin for a weekend in May - and there will be 3 of us. 1 guy, 2 girls, in our 20s/30s. We do want to do some of the standard sightseeing - but also want a place with a fun night vibe. We're NYers, so walking is not a concern - but we do want a fairly central location. We'll likely check out an apartment rental through airbnb.com. Any suggestions?! Thanks!

Mitte, as the name suggests, comprises the very centre of Berlin. Prenzlauer Berg borders Mitte to the north-east and is itself fairly central. Both areas have popular nightlife. Mitte has the highest concentration of sightseeing and tourist attractions.

Mitte and Prenzlauer Berg are both excellently situated from which to explore Berlin, but of the two, Mitte would be my choice.

Really not a lot of difference. Mitte around Rosenthaler Platz or immediately adjacent Prenzlauer Berg around Kastanienallee would be my first choice for "fun night vibe." Stay away from Friedrichstrasse which is a lively commercial area during the daytime but dies at night. Also, Prenzl Berg around Kollwitzplatz or Mitte around Hackescher Markt, although the latter is very touristy.
