Hi, do most stores and restaurant in Wurzburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber accept credit cards?
Yes, in Würzburg even pretty much any small shop accepts credit cards. Generally in Germany, small independent stores and restaurants often do not.
In Restaurants/Supermarket or Department Stores credit cards are mostly accepted. But mostly Visa or Mastercard, with Amex you will have some problems. Germany is a cash oriented country. We do not like to be living on credit, so it is always a good idea to carry some cash with you. Especially in little stores like a bakery, you can only pay in cash
Sorry, I meant in RodT even small shops will take cc as the town gets so many international tourists.
As for Würzburg, most restaurants I know take credit cards. If you do not have enough cash and are unsure simply ask before sitting down or check the door for MC/Visa stickers.
We found many places had a minimum for using a CC. Make sure you check that as well. Best to know where ATM's are that are compatible with your bank back home, so you can get cash when needed. We thought we had plenty, but our last day or two was a struggle with this issue.
Best of luck with your travel plans
And think about using a card that doesn't charge a foreign transaction fee (we use Capitol One) those can add up.
