Day trip to Switzerland

We are staying in Garmisch the first week of April and would love to take a day trip to Switzerland that doesn't involve a great deal of driving, as would going to Zurich or Lucerne. Any ideas on charming villages or scenery there that we could see?. We have a car. Thank you!

Why Switzerland? Austria is beautiful too, and right there! You're just over the border from the Tyrol. No need to change money either.

Zürich is 3,5 hours by car from Garmisch, Lucerne 4 hours.

A bit far for a day trip.

Just a few kilometers from Garmisch you have with Mittenwald one of the most charming towns of the Alps.

And there are plenty more charming and scenic spots much closer to Garmisch.

You could also visit Austria, Switzerland and even South Tyrol (Northern Italy) from Garmish in one day if you are willing to do a bit of driving in a very pleasant area. Take B23 from GP to Ehrwald (Austria). From there over the Fernpass via the 179 and 189 to Imst. From there to Landeck via the 171. Buy a decent map of the area. From Landeck

take the 180 south (follow directions stating "Reschen". If you go this direction you will find a sign saying "Samnaun". The Samnaun valley belongs to Swiss territory but can only be reached from Austria. The special thing is that you can use there your Euros and that shopping is tax free. Many restaurants, gift shops, petrol stations etc. and a very beatiful scenery. From the entry of this valley (its a dead end) you are about 5km north of the Italian border. If you decide to go further south you will drive by the Reschensee (Lago di Resia) a very beautiful lake with an interesting history. To go back just drive the same way north or drive further south till Schluderns where you can follow the 41 to Switzerland (this time no dead end, no tax free area). Drive till you reach Zernez and then follow the 27. You will re-enter Austria slightly south of the entry to Samnaun valley. From there go north back to GP. A bit of driving but you will see four different countries in one day and numerous sights.
