There are not that many options as there are not than many bridges over the Rhine.

Gengenbach - a charming old-world town - is ideal if you plan to visit Strasbourg, Freiburg, or the Black forest villages.

From Gengenbach, daytrips by train and/or bus are free to the latter villages (accessible via the scenic Black Forest Railway line where Gengenbach is situated) and Freiburg with the Konus card (no charge) you get from your hosts.

More than close but I'd still suggest two different bases. The Konus transportation system in the Black Forest is really excellent but can be slow if transfers, etc, are needed - Gengenbach has the advantage of being on the main line and is lovely itself (other villages are as nice but might require a car for reasonable day trips). For a "big city" with museums, etc, either Freiburg or Baden-Baden are good choices, although I prefer Baden-Baden.

For the Alsace portion you will definitely need a car unless you limit your visit to Strasbourg, Colmar, and, say, Obernai. I'd recommend staying a bit north of Colmar in the Bergheim area, so that Strasbourg, Colmar, the route de vin and even the route des cretes make easy day trips.

A week is pretty short and you should plan your routes carefully - an hour drive, be it on the highway or along a mountain road, is not so bad - but it's better to spend that hour in a nice Konditorei or tasting wine, etc.

Along with researching sites to visit, research food - so many specialties, so few meals!
