Eiffel Tower - Day or Night?

We are visiting Paris for the first time for 3 nights in early December and plan to pre-purchase tickets for the Eiffel Tower. Undecided about the best time of day to visit? We are stayng in the Montmarte District and ideally want to combine the Tower with a full day of siteseeing, starting from the hotel at around 10.30am - back to hotel to change and then out to dinner (special birthday evening). It will be a Sunday evening. Any suggestions for itinerary for the day would be great.

WE prefer it at night but YMMV. Be sure you walk across to Trocadero before or after for the spectacular night views. We did it last year on Oct 5 with tickets ahead and it poured rain and was a bit foggy -- we went anyway because we had the tickets -- it was beautiful. You can see snapshots to get an idea in my photo journal. I think it is just prettier at night. By getting tickets ahead you do run the weather risk -- but we still enjoyed it.

If this is your first visit I would go during day - Eiffel Tower is quite far away from major landmarks, so if you want to take pictures from top and even locate them, it would be much easier during day time. In Dec who knows what the whether could be - at least try to avoid morning since it may be a bit foggy at this time of year. Agree ith previous comment, walk across to Trocadero for the spectacular night views ( and when the tower is flashing at the hour )

We went about an hour before dusk so had day and night views. It was perfect. In Dec not as crowded so might want to wait for day of tickets? Just a thought.

Enjoy your trip

I agree with Chitownbigcityfan (side note-Go Cubs!) - Sunset is a great time to be there. You see Paris before you in daylight, then watch the sunset, then the lights start to come on over the city. That being said, you'll enjoy it at any time of day. Typically it is most crowded with tour groups and such during the day, but it shouldn't be too bad in December. Sunset is early at that time of year, so if you want to end the day there, it may already be dark. With your schedule, though, you way want to go to the ET first, as it is rather far from Montmartre, and gradually make your way back towards the hotel for your pre-dinner "pit-stop."

Yet the lights on the Eiffel Tower (every hour on the hour) at night cannot be beat, especially for Paris first time visitors. That's a must see at night.

We climbed to the second level at night. It was magnificent. We observed the ET from Trocadero in brilliant sunshine. It was magnificent. We observed the ET from its base and as we gazed upward it was magnificent and overpowering. We observed the ET from La Place de la Republique at dusk. It was magnificent. Enjoy Paris and travel safely.

Just returned from Paris & would recommend a daytime trip up the Eiffel Tower & an evening trip up the Montparnesse tower That way you get to seethe Eiffel tower & the rest of Paris lit up Best of both worlds 😁

Thanks everyone for your very helpful input. We have opted for tickets at 1.30pm so we have plenty of time in the morning and also plenty of time to get back before pre-dinner drinks for my celebration birthday meal. We shall definitely look into going up the Montparnesse tower as well.
