Poor air quality - road and speed restrictions

Poor air quality resulting from the current very hot weather means that travel restrictions are being implemented in various parts of France which ban cars with Crit'air 4 or 5 stickers or no Crit'air sticker at all from certain areas - Paris, Lyon and the whole of the Département of Isère (round, and south of, Grenoble) have been mentioned. Autoroutes are not affected by the restrictions but they, and other roads, may be subject to special speed limits, some as low as 20 km/h.

No one respect the new speed limits unfortunately. If someone did, he'd nearly cause a crash. The only way would be to enforce it with mobile speed cameras. But they can't because the law says all the old signs must have the new speed in order to fine someone with an automatic speed camera. As is, only a police patrol can fine you, it's 35 €, no point taken from your licence.

Strasbourg is also affected by traffic restrictions today - for the first time.

The police have set up some checkpoints. According to the local journal, today the police gives only information on restrictions and no fines yet.

Thank you for the update. We are at MSM tonight and have a rental car. Our plan is to drive to Versailles tomorrow and then we are driving into Paris on Wednesday afternoon where we return the rental car in central Paris. Can we expect any issues wth our rental car return?

Possibly if you have no Critair sticker on your windscreen.

But any car hired in France should have a Crit'air sticker unless it has been pushed out into the hire market before the sticker has arrived. At least hire cars are inevitably modern and would therefore qualify for the necessary sticker.
