Train tickets - not using outward ticket on round trip trip

Because of a change in plans we are contemplating booking a different outgoing train than what we originally purchased a few months ago. We would like to keep the return portion of the round trip ticket though. Can we do that? Or is the whole ticket voided when we don't show for the outgoing portion?

Train tickets in France are all singles. If you have tickets for a return journey you will have two single tickets, quite possibly at different prices because of market-pricing. With some tickets (semi-flex) it is possible to change a booking prior to the time of travel subject to the payment of a fee and any difference between the price paid and the current price.

And even if you were unable to do that (perhaps the outgoing ticket was a non-refundable type), there is no penalty for not using the outgoing ticket.

It’s not like airline tickets where a no-show on the outgoing ticket would result in cancellation of the subsequent legs of the journey.

Great! That's what we thought, but good to have our thoughts confirmed. Thank you!

Unless this is in conjunction with a "Carte Weekend" which requires a return journey there will no problems.

If it is a Carte weekend ticket you will know it. Do check to see if you can get anything for the unused portion.

Even it's a week-end card journey, you can use the return even if you dont use the go. However, you cannot be reimbursed only for the first trip only, and you cannot be reimbursed once the first trip has leaved.
