Destination ideas - France with kids

We are currently exploring the ideas of flying in/out of Paris at the end of April. We will have about 10 days and will be traveling with our twins who will be 12 at the time of travel.

We plan to spend 2-3 days in Paris (we have been previously) - but we need ideas for the rest of the trip. We’ve not explored any areas of France outside of Paris, previously. Ideally, we would like destinations that are 4 hours or less by train.

My kids are good travelers and managed to see a fair amount of Europe when we lived in the UK for 6 months in 2016. They (and we do as well) enjoy historical experiences, nature/animals, new foods, hiking, and boating. They also enjoy art museums - although in a limited capacity - a few hours at a time and not the main emphasis of the trip.

We like cities, smaller towns, and countryside and are open to any and all possibilities. A mix would be great. We are also open to visiting destinations outside of France - I personally have an interest in Bruges (but don’t need to include that on this trip, unless it makes sense with the rest of the itinerary).

Thank you for your suggestions!

I should add, we have no interest in Disneyland while we are there!

Your question has about 100 answers so what you need to do first is the old fashioned thing and get some guidebooks about France and figure out which region interests you most and then get guidebooks for that region. If you plan on only traveling by train (and I would suggest renting a car will be a better option) then research the website seat61.com to learn about train travel in France and Europe in general. See autoeurope.com for car rental info.

Almost all of France can be reached in 4 hours by train. You just have to define what interests you: beach, mountain, campgne, typical villages, historical regions ... You can buy a guidebook, but also find a lot of informations on the Internet!

Will you rent a car once you've reached the main cities connected to Paris by train ? Sounds like you enjoy everything. April obviously limits your choices unless you are true adventurers. For example, I enjoy the mountains in April. Not skiing, but snowshoeing. A nice trip is train to Grenoble (3h) rent a car, drive to Briançon ( bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… ), explore La Grave and the area on the way, then see the fortified city of Briançon, some nice snowshoeing in Vallée de la Clarée (gorgeous in winter bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… ), plenty to do here for an active vacation. In nearby Queyras, more historic things to see, like Château Queyras, Fort Dauphin, the village of Saint Véran bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… ...

If you want something less active, 2 obivous options come to mind. One is Provence : train to Avignon, rent a car and explore the villages of Luberon bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… , the gorges du Verdon, the Alpilles, maybe Camargue for the flamingoes bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… ... All this would take around 10 days, but you can pick and choose. The second option is Périgord/Quercy/Albi, more centered around medieval villages. The castles and villages around Sarlat, the ones of Corrèze, Rocamadour bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… , Saint Cirq La Popie bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… then Figeac, Conques bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… ... Further South Albi and Cordes sur Ciel... There is a ton of things to see and do. If you want gorges, the gorges du Tarn are also amazing bushwalk.com/forum/download/file.php… Without the gorges, you can sample the region in a week. If you want to add the gorges, and maybe Haut Languedoc, add 3 top 4 days.

Other regions would be worth it in April, like the Loire Valley, Brittany, Alsace... but they'll be a bit rainy.

Fly in to one city and fly out from another. Train to Bruges is on the way to Amsterdam for example. Or follow the heat via train down to Spain with stop(s) in France and fly home from Barcelona.
