Day Trips

We'll be staying in Macclesfield with friends in July. We plan on taking the train and will not have a car. What are some good destinations less than two hours away by rail? We like scenery, walking, boat rides, good food, meeting/interacting with local people, shopping.

Thanks in advance!

<<will not have a car>> please do reconsider. There are some car rental places in centre of Macc.

Macclesfield is just outside the Peak District which is a superb area (one of the best in UK) to visit for most of the things you wish to experience. But it would be "so" much easier, better and more flexible if you rented a car for a few days whilst staying in Macclesfield.

Marple is a nice place to visit. Or the Anderton boat lift in Northwich might be worth visiting. The Peak district is the place for scenery in bucketloads.Walking along the Monsal trail, with maybe a trip on the Peak railway, going up the Heights of Abraham and to Matlock baths is worth doing. A visit to Eyam is well worth visiting the Plague village, along with Bakewell and Buxton.

<<Marple is a nice place to visit>> that's a good example of why a car would be so much better than a train

Whilst the two locations are only 12.2 miles apart, it would take just over an hour to get between the two by train (into Manchester Piccadilly and change for the Marple train).

Recommended day trips from Manchester by train IMO are....

For scenery & countryside... Castleton via (Hope, Derbyshire train station), Edale, Bamford, Hebden Bridge/Haworth,/Heptonstall, Clitheroe, Whalley, Chirk Castle (change in Chester), Powys Castle (change in Shrewsbury).

Beautiful historic towns and cities.... Chester, York, Lancaster, Knutsford (Tatton Park), Shrewsbury, Ludlow, Nantwich, Skipton (bus from Clitheroe),

Nice coastal places.... Llandudno & Formby.
