One day only in Dublin

We are planning an Ireland trip next spring and at the moment the plan is to fly to Dublin where we stay for 2 nights before travelling over to Galway where we will base ourselves for the rest of the holiday.

Therefore we will have one full day in Dublin - what are the "must sees" or "must dos".

Also we are looking at the Ariel House Guesthouse in Lansdowne Road, Ballsbridge. I understand this is in the Dublin suburbs. Am I right in thinking it would take about 15-20 mins to walk into the city centre?

Ballsbridge is about 20 minutes from the City (could get the number 10 bus into the centre). You could do the following:

Hop on / Hop Off bus tour of the city

Trinity College

Natural History Museum (Merrion Sq.)

National Gallery of Ireland (Merrion Sq.)

Writers Musuem (Parnell Square)

Howth Village (on the Northside of Dublin, can get there by DART (train) or by 31 bus (31b to the summit))

Gate Theatre for a play

Oscar Wilde's House on Merrion Sq.

Malahide Castle

Kilmainham Gaol

Merrion Hotel for a cocktail!!!

St. Stephen's Green

Iveagh Gardens (turn right at the end of Earlsfort Terrace)

Christchurch Cathedral / St. Patrick's Cathedral (walking distance from each other)

Ideas for restaurants: www.menupages.ie

website: www.dublintourist.com

O'Neills Pub on Suffolk Street (serves food)

The Tourist Office is on St. Andrew Street (in a Church) and give ideas about day trips etc.

Hope this helps.

From Lansdowne Road to the city centre (O'Connell Bridge ) is more like a 40 minute walk

There is a DART (rail) station on Lansdowne Road that will have you in the city centre in minutes - get off at the third stop, Tara Street

The Ariel House Guesthouse is a one minute walk from Lansdowne Road Dart (train) station. From there you're 2/3/4 stops away from the city centre depending on which city centre station you want to get off at.

It seems it is further away from the city centre than I had thought however it appears to have good links to the public transport system.
