Tours and/or Ferry John O Groats to Orkneys

I will be having a full day in John O Groats on Tuesday 26th April.

Are there any day tours from John O Groats to the Orkneys.

If there are non, maybe take my car to the Orkneys for 1 day.

Looking at the day trips they seem to start in May, and even the ferry timetable from John O Groats starts in May.

Can anyone help me with some information.

I would take your car over. You can catch a ferry about 3 miles from Jogn O Groats at Gills Bay. Catch the 0930 ferry and return on the 1650 ferry. The ferry crossing takes just over an hour http://pentlandferries.co.uk/timetable.asp

Another question.

If I take the 0930 ferry, arriving at around 1030. Then seeing Skara Brae, Scapa Flow, Ring of Brodgar, Standing Stones of Stenness, Maeshowe. Then leaving on the 1650 ferry, would I have time to see all of the above?

I would say yes, with your car, because they are not that far apart. Have a good look at a map and make a plan of attack while prioritizing. Double check each website carefully, make sure ticketed sights are open, take note if any timed visits are required, I recall Maeshowe only does timed hourly guided tours tickets purchased across the street. If you must skip something due to time let it be your least favorite.

Yes you will have plenty of time. You will arrive at St Margarets Hope and will drive over the Churchill Barriers (be sure to stop at The Italian Chapel) on the way to Kirkwall. You can book Maes Howe by phone before arriving in Orkney historic-scotland.gov.uk/propertyresults/…

After visiting the sites on your list you should still have time to have a wander round Kirkwall and visit The Cathedral.

If you are at the Italian Chapel, the Orkney wine company is right next door and worth a wee pop into the shop

One thing I have mentioned before is watch you dont hit Orkney the same day as one of the big cruise ships. It is chaotic at the tourist sites, when a big one comes in.

There are many fine coastal views on Orkney but one that you could fit in with just a short detour when you are in the Skara Brae area is Yesnaby. Well worth checking it out :-)
