train ticket questions

Our group (3 people) plans to take 3 train trips from Glasgow, all roundtrip. These are all 7-14 days from now.

Glasgow - Inverness

Glasgow - Edinburgh (day trip)

Glasgow - Ayr (day trip)

Two questions:

(1) What is the best website to buy the tickets? I am based in the U.S., and I would prefer to have the tickets in hand (e-ticket), rather than have to do anything at a train station beforehand, if possible. In the past I seem to remember having to print out tickets at a British rail station, even though I had bought them in advance.

(2) I think it definitely makes sense to buy tickets for the Inverness trip in advance, but Is there any need for the others? I have no idea how full the trains are.

1. Re: train ticket questions

Edinburgh goes from Queen St Station and Ayr from Central Station. You can just buy these at the station on the day.

Inverness is from Queen St and you should buy in advance. There are cheap Advance Purchase fares but you may be too late for them.

(1) www.scotrail.co.uk ——- enter the booking reference to a station ticket machine, swipe the card previously used to buy on line (simply for ID purposes) get ticket and travel

(2) correct, on the day for 2 of those and in advance for 1

You cannot print at home (e-ticket) you must pick up your tickets at either a manned station or one that has a machine.

Only Inverness Route does an advance ticket need to be purchased, but you might be to late to make any savings!

If so just buy on the day that way if your plans should change you have lost nothing.

Are all three of you adults? If not, for the trip to Ayr look at the Daytripper ticket www.spt.co.uk/travelcards/day-tickets/.
