I am planning a travel from edingburgh to oban with family. Please advise wether scotrail allow large luggage bags ? What is the most convenient way to travel from Edinburgh to oban?
Is there any particular place or rack where we can keep the luggage ?
There are racks for large luggage at the end of each carriage.
There are luggage rack at the beginning of each carriage. However, I aways sit close to them and keep my case in sight. I worry anyone can get off the train with my suitcase as there is no security at any door.
Define Large Luggage Bags?
Are we talking a Large Suitcase or what?
As said you can bring the Kitchen Sink as long as it can fit on the Racks (which a Large Suitcase will) and it does not protrude or endanger other passengers, and does not block the passageway or Doors.
Public transport is designed to carry baggage with passengers - it would be pretty pointless otherwise !!
The main problem is how much you have and physically moving it about and on/off the trains. (and if the station you alight at is not a terminal station, you need to cart your stuff and family off the train fairly quickly)
Be one of the first on the train and enter at the end of the compartment where the luggage racks are located would be my advice. There really is not that much room on the racks. During our trip, we found that we actually preferred buses over trains for overall comfort and luggage logistics.
There are limits to what you can officially take on trains in UK
Two large bags such as suitcases or rucksacks and one small item such as a briefcase
National Rail says three items but doesn't specify the size beyond
"your luggage would obstruct doorways, gangways or corridors"
"the loading or unloading may cause delay to trains"
