Good areas in Cardiff

I will be relocating to Cardiff in September to study again and need to be not too far from Llandaff. Which areas would you recommend and which ones do you think I should avoid?

I have heard Pontcanna is a lovely area but is a little pricey so would be good to hear other similar areas?

Hi there

I don't think this is the right forum for your question. This is a travel forum, primarily for questions about a short visit to Cardiff (or any destination), not a permanent move. In addition, without knowing what you would consider a "good area" it's impossible to answer your question.

I think you'll need to research elsewhere - maybe the institution you're studying at has information and advice for new students?

Hope you enjoy it here though.

p.s. I'm guessing you may be coming to Cardiff Met, in which case you may find their website useful: https:/…default.aspx

I'll probably upset a few people here, but nearby areas to avoid in my opinion would be Ely, Gabalfa and Fairwater.

Assuming you'll be at Cardiff Met, then Birchgrove, Heath (expensive) and Whitchurch are nice. All depends on budget of course and if you have your own transport

Cardiff is a small city, so travelling around is relatively straightforward. Most students head towards Cathays, regardless of which college they attend, but it depends upon age, interests, whether you want a shared house, etc. Cardiff Met has halls of residence next to the BBC in Llandaff ~ 10 - 15 minute walk to college, and there are several rental flats and houses in Llandaff itself. Llandaff North is a cheaper area and is a short walk along the river to college. Some of the houses alongside the A48 on the Gabalfa estate are rentals, and Cardiff Met is even closer from those. The college should be able to provide you with a list of approved rentals and there are local agents specialising in student rentals. Pontcanna has the advantage of being walking distance to town and a shortish walk to college through Llandaff fields. Llandaff is a pleasant area and I hope you enjoy your time here.

Hi there,

Gabalfa is not too bad and Llandaff North is nice. There is also Canton which is very near Pontcanna. I live in Llandaff North myself and if you are going to the Campus on Western Avenue then it is very close.
