What to do late evenings in September?

We are mother & daughter, 55 & 70's, staying in Earls Court area from Thursday to Sunday night at first of September before a cruise out of Southampton. We have a pretty good itinerary for the days we are there but don't want to go back and sit around the hotel in the late evenings. Could we have a few suggestions for night-time activities? What about Southbank Centre, Covent Garden, Trafalgar Square? We are going to the British Museum on Friday afternoon, staying for the early evening hours, so any suggestions for after they close? We are not timid about using the tube and busses, but want to stay where there are bright lights and people about. Thanks for any advice.

Having a nice dinner can take up a good part of the evening. There are concerts, shows and plays on in many venues across London , if you add a meal before or after that’s an evening taken up.

You could visit a pub or bar if you’d like a drink or cocktail. A jazz club? There will be orchestral concerts and if you enjoy serious classical music have a look at the Wigmore Hall schedule.

There's the theatre. Or London Walks (walks.com) if your feet are up for it. If you've had a full day of touring, there is no shame in propping your feet up in your hotel room, watch some British telly and resting up for the next day.

I'm really thinking more of nighttime walks, say along the river, or places where there are street performers, lots of bright lights and people watching, more the hours from 20:00 to 23:00. For instance, we are going to Harrods on a Thursday evening when they are open late, so anything interesting nearby? The Troubadour is right down the road from our hotel. Do they have any live music these days? What about any other venues near Earls Court?

You might check TimeOut London closer to September to see what events might be on. https://www.timeout.com/london

Evenings in late September can be chilly.
