4 days in Liverpool during Christmas period

Hi, we're a family of 4 (children ages 17 and 21) planning to watch a soccer match on 26 Dec. We'll be arriving from Amsterdam on 24 Dec (date flexible) and depart on 27 Dec to London, flight back to home country on 28 Dec.

We understand during this period, trains and airport will not be in operation even malls and restaurants will not open. Please advise the following:

1) when is a good time to arrive in Liverpool for the game (no issue with transport)

2) what activity can we do during this period

3) will Cheshire Oak open on 24 or 26 Dec?

4) will it be better for us to arrive Liverpool on match day and spend 24-25 Dec in Amsterdam or London instead?

(We're planning to be in London 15-20 Dec, in Amsterdam 20-24 Dec, in Liverpool 24-27 Dec and return to London on 27 Dec)

Thank you for your response and suggestions.

Everywhere open on December 24 but some places may close late afternoon Almost every where shut on 25 Dec

Almost every where open on 26 December

As everyone rushes out to the shops again because they have been closed for just one day

Have you got tickets for the game?

If not then you might find it either difficult or very expensive

Do not attempt to get tickets from other than official sources.

The Premier League is unique in that nearly all matches are sold out and as many visitors from across the "Pond" (and others) have found out you cannot just walk up and get in.

You can get from London to Amsterdam by train and use www.nationalrail.co.uk for UK trains.

The better prices are booked in advance

Thank you for the responses. We've got our tickets from Thomas Cook.

Leuca - I gather the city will be quiet only on Christmas day itself and hence it'll be safe for us to arrive either on 24 or 26 Dec.

Taurean_traveller 122 - yes, am aware of advance booking but guess now it's too early - tried but ticket is still not available.

I suppose we can still take a train from Amsterdam to Liverpool on 24 Dec? Prefer train over flight as it's more scenic though travelling time is longer.

You can travel from Amsterdam to Liverpool by train on Christmas Eve, although depart in the morning as the last train from London to Liverpool will be much earlier tham usual.

I would try and arrive in Liverpool 24 Dec and get settled rather than try and travel 25 or 26 . The city centre shops will close around 5pm on Xmas eve but most restaurants and bars etc will stay open through to 11pm ish ( some even later ) .

Cheshire oaks is usually open to 5pm on Xmas eve and then full day 26 and 27 but just be aware it’s approx 30 / 40 mins by car from Liverpool centre and over 1 hr by public transport to Cheshire oaks , I can’t really see you doing this and a 3pm Liverpool match on the same day as you have mentioned, unless you rush around Cheshire oaks ( most people spend at least 3 hrs there many stay much longer )

Have fun

Ps Liverpool city centre has many fine shops and will be on full sale at your dates ( ie all goods heavily discounted )

I would not rely on being able to take a train on the 24th. It is not unusual for whole lines to be closed for engineering work during Christmas Week, and arrangements for this are not normally finalised or announced until some time in September or even later.

With Christmas Eve being a Monday this year it is likely that any engineering work closures will start on or before that day - as the last working day before Christmas will be Friday 21st.

You may be lucky - trains between London and Liverpool may be operating normally this year - but you won't know until much nearer the time.

I used to spend Christmas with family in the Liverpool area, and there were quite a few years when I either had to travel up several days before Christmas, or resort to taking the car.

Thank you all for the information - it's very helpful.

Now it seems not worth taking a trip to Cheshire Oak due to time constrain and as Purdydog suggested, malls/shops at Liverpool city centre have huge discounts or perhaps travel out to Bicester Village while in London.

Aviatrix - considering the advice received from another posts that public transport will not be in operation during that period, am thinking of the following:

1) train : London-Amsterdam on 20 Dec

2) flight : Amsterdam-Liverpool on 24 Dec

3) train : Liverpool-London on 27 Dec

While the above may work, it does not make good financial sense as they're all a one-way ticket. If at all possible, would prefer to do trains Lon-Ams (return) Lon-Liv (return), however, will not know if this is doable until much later thus asking if anyone on TA has any experience or can provide advice to enable me to plan the logistics sensibly.
