London to Port Isaac

Id like to see Port Isaac later this year. Ill be coming from London and getting the GWR Train. Where would be the best station to get off at and potentially stay at that will make it easy for me to get to Port Isaac for a day trip?

A day trip isn't feasible, you'll spend virtually the whole day travelling

If you estimate around 4 hours on the train from Paddington to Bodmin Parkway then a pre booked taxi for the 18 miles to Port Isaac you’ve got a travel time of a minimum of 9-10 hours for the return journey. Plus however long you spend in Port Isaac.

You could fly to Newquay airport then get a taxi. Although actual travel time would be shorter you’d need to allow time for check in at the start of the outward and return journey.

I do a similar journey frequently and it’s exhausting for a weekend. Would I do a day trip? Not a chance. Unless you can stay at least one night I’d have to say it’s not worth it

I wouldn't even do it for a one night stay. You need three or four days to make it in any way sensible. A day trip from London would be bonkers.

I read the question as OP is asking where he can stay to do a day trip not can he do a day trip from London.

That's how I read it too.

If you get off the train at Bodmin Parkway then get the bus to Wadebridge, you could stay there and get the bus to and from Port Isaac for a day trip. Wadebridge isn't too bad for day trips to other places too, Boscastle, Bude, Tintagel to name but a few, and it's quite a nice town in itself.

Annabelle's suggestions are a good choice. Tintagel, Boscastle and Bude are some of my favourites. Stagecoach run a service between Bude and Exeter St Davids station. Just an alternative depending on bus times etc. https:/…6_WEB_250218_FINAL.pdf

You could stay in Padstow and do a day trip to Port Issac.

The school in Doc Martin is actually a hotel, so you could even stay there! The Old School Hotel.

Will let you check journey details. I think the suggestion of Wadebridge is far superior to Padstow.

Padstow would be okay if you were staying for a longer holiday. The extra time travelling between Padstow and Wadebridge, once each for arrival and departure from train service, and once each way for the Port Isaac trip is eating up time.

Based on previous queries using Bude as a base doesn't work well due to poor inter-connections of the bus routes.

The travel planner will tend to show use of the Padstow-Rock ferry + 20 minute walk, switch off Ferry in mode of transport, it is easier to swap buses at Wadebridge bus station.

Taxi from Rock Ferry may be worth considering. 7-8 miles £20 each way? Worth getting a quote. I would prefer to stay in Wadebridge!
