Try the Brewery Tap or the Bear & Billet - both are on Lower Bridge Street and are family friendly.

The Albion on Park Street, a short walk from Lower Bridge Street, is another option; or the Pied Bull on the the other side of the cathedral:

The food at the Brewery Tap is probably the best, followed by the Albion.

P.S. regarding which of those pubs have an "open log fire" - the Bear & Billet definately does have one; but I can not remember if the Brewery Tap has one, even though I have been there many times!

I have only been to the Albion once and can't remember seeing a open fire; and the Pied Bull has an open fire, but it is a faux "real open fire" powered by gas.

I very much doubt that the Albion is family friendly, unless they are all over 21.

Have to agree with # 4. The Albion markets itself as being an old time pub, no clidren, no plastic food etc etc.

Ye Olde Kings Head on Lower Bridge Street claimed to be family friendly and have real fire but not been in recently and they have had a few changes in the last few years

If the children are eating then very few places will object during the day

The Albion don't like to have children. Down lower Bridge st there is good family pubs like the bear and bill.

Don't know when you are planning to come, but I would be surprised if any fires will be lit now until October or thereabouts. Most pubs are family friendly, the Albion prides itself on not being so.

When we came years ago we found not many were family friendly and the ones that did allow children in said not allowed after 5pm. Even weatherspoons wouldn't let us in the doors when we went to go in a couple of minutes past 5pm.

A big pub by the canal (can't remember the name, behind a supermarket ) with outside area did actually welcome us inside the pub

Thanks for the replies given to splarding above. Now made a note to avoid The Albion ;)

Hoping we can get our 17yr old in a few places at night this time when we come in June.
