Drive from New Plymouth to Auckland in one day?

Hi,

We will be visiting family in Oakura over the Christmas holiday. We were thinking afterwards of driving up to Auckland, with a stop in Matamata to hit Skydive Waikato for some jumps. From the map, it looks like about a 5 hour drive, which seems doable. But our family told us that's a very bad idea and we should fly from NP to Auckland and then drive down to Matamata.

We would probably drive overnight, or else starting very early in the morning. So that we got to Skydive Waikato by the afternoon, so we could do some jumps that day. Then perhaps stay over in that area, and carry on to Auckland in the morning. (Looks like about 1.5 hours to Auckland area)

Any opinions of those who are familiar with the area? Is it not a good drive to make?

Thanks!

If you drove direct to Auckland it would be about 5 hours, via Matamata about 6 hours in total.

As long as you take it easy and share the driving I don't see a problem with doing that in a day.

I personally wouldn't drive overnight, leave at 7 in the morning and you'll be in Matamata easily by midday.
