Driving yourselves is easiest. Otherwise it involves bus and train and shuttle. BTW, Northstar is not in South Lake Tahoe. Closer to Truckee.

Thanks for that. Do the roads ever get closed during the season & how long would the drive be?

Thanks in advance

Yes, they can close or require chains. Be sure to rent a 4WD car. Drive time weekday late morning in fair weather is about 3.5 hours.

I suppose it depends where in SF you start your journey, but it takes our son about 4 hours to Northstar. Maybe that also includes a drive thru snack or potty break for a few minutes on the way.

He doesn't have 4 wheel drive, but carries chains in his trunk. Knock on wood he's never had to use them.

It's about 4 hours. Best to rent an AWD or 4WD so you don't have to deal with chains which are now allowed on rental cars anyways.

Roads do close down but you usually get some warnings so pay attention to conditions before you head off.

Yes, I agree with all the others that driving is the best option. If you don't want to drive you can fly to Reno and catch the North Lake Tahoe shuttle, but it will be expensive and you won't save any time.

Having a car is great as you can easily drive to Lake Tahoe and check out the sites.
