Which airline?

I will be travelling from Lombok to GilisTtrawangan next July. I dont want to do the boat this time, as it was very rough last time and it terrified me, the swell was huge. I do want to fly but i am not sure about which airline to go with. I know that the safety standards with some indo airlines are below average. Does anyone know of a good safe airline that does the trip? Thanks!

As far as I know boat is the only means of transport to Gili Trawangan from Lombok. You may just need to wait for a day when the sea is calmer to make the crossing to GT.

Dee if you are asking about flying Bali to Lombok (which I assume you are as there is no direct flight from Australia) then Garuda is the best airline, although it only has an evening service. Otherwise the others are all much the same. The most unreliable for schedule is Merpati.

Some of the better hotels on Gili T will arrange an airport pickup and transfer to the island in their speedboat which is the way to go.

There are plenty of air services running between Bali and Lombok everyday and it is only a 20m flight.

If wanting to go to Gili Islands from the airport in Lombok the Airport Taksi rates are:

Teluk Nara: Rp 125,000 (Zone 10a) to get a speed boat

Bangsal/Pemenang: Rp 115,000 (Zone-10) to get the public ferry

If you go to Senggigi first the Bluebird taxi rate on a meter is around Rp 60,000 to Bangsal depending on what part of Senggigi you are departing from. Aim to arrive for a boat departure no later than 3:30PM as the ferry stops and a private charter will start getting difficult.

Lombok's airport is sometimes described as "Ampenan, and sometimes as "Mataram" in airline destination lists but the IATA code is always AMI.

Indonesia Air Transport http://www.iat.co.id/IAT

Garuda Indonesia http://www.garuda-indonesia.com

Wings Abadi Air (Lion Air) http://www2.lionair.co.id/

Merpati Airlines http://www.merpati.co.id/

TransNusa http://www.transnusa.co.id/

Trigana http://www.trigana-air.com/html/module.php

Wings have some new ATR72-500's turbo props on their fleet and Merpati have some new MA60 turboprops. Garuda and Merpati both operate older 737's. Have a look at http://wikitravel.org/en/Lombok#Get_in for more details.

The others are a mixture of assorted turbo prop aircraft including Fokker and ATR's and Dash 8's. You may wish to consider the Wings air flights. Check their flight times at http://www2.lionair.co.id for a morning and an afternoon flight. There is no record of mishaps on this route but there are occasional cancellations for various operational reasons

Perama tours also run boat services and arrange through bookings for Bali to Lombok. http//www.peramatour.com

I hope this assists

Lombok airport is also (correctly) known as Selaparang. It is sometimes displayed as that on arrival/departure boards at other Indonesian airports. It's like Bali airport is Ngurah Rai airport.

Just used Merpati last week for the round trip to and from Bali. First flight was delayed about 10 minutes. The return got us in early. Both on an MA60. The rate was cheaper than the other competitors.

As far as I know Lion Air is the cheapest low cost carrier at this route, and Garuda is the best.

I'm sorry for your horrible experience. If you find the sea is more calm at the day, fast boat might be better to save more money and time. All you need to do is to choose the best boat. Some boats are below standard to cut the cost. You may consult with fast boats organizer.
