Lake Tahoe with Pre-Schoolers

We are planning a four-five week trip to California in August / September 2019 with our three boys who will be 5, 3 and 22 months by that time. Our rough plan is to spend a few days in San Francisco, two weeks in the Carmel area, one week in the Lake Tahoe area and one week in Yosemite. My eldest would love to go camping or stay in an RV.

As regards Lake Tahoe, is there any particular area that would be better for staying with young children? They all like being outdoors. Are there any RV campsites that are great for small children in terms of paddling pools, swimming pools, soft play areas etc? Alternatively are there any hotels or lodges which are particularly good for young children?

Any ideas for the trip would be much appreciated. I’m not quite sure where to start with the Lake Tahoe and Yosemite legs of the trip so any guidance would be much appreciated.

Have you encountered any really impressive child friendly places in your travels, and What specifically make them very child friendly for you? There may be places in Lake Tahoe that offer those same services, which you found impressive that someone can direct you to. Generally, our experience as Grandparents traveling with toddlers has been that the more involved adults that are traveling with the toddler party, the better to help with supervision and safety, regardless of location. Resort areas like the Hyatt or Squaw Valley May be a consideration because there is less loading and unloading kids for car travel.

You need to book Yosemite right away. That may determines your itinerary. Two weeks in the Carmel area seems like a lot to me.

There are some neat 'glamping' or cabin camping options in both Lake Tahoe and Yosemite

Lake Tahoe-- check the RV Parks, many have Cabins for rent too. Also check the Campgrounds, I know that Campground by the Lake has Cabins and fallen leaf has yurts.

Yosemite- check housekeeping camp and (half Dome Village) inside the park. And the RV Parks outside of the park.

Also, you might want to look at just staying a few nights at a KOA in a cabin-- they are usually very family friendly and will give the 5 year old a 'camping' experience. There is a well reviewed KOA in Santa Cruz / Monterey area.

Or look at the little Tent Cabins in Big Basin State Park near SF-- such a beautiful setting and you can rent all the supplies you need for a night or two of 'camping'.

(But a couple nights at Housekeeping camp in Yosemite would be really great too, for a first-time 'experience')

All three of your children will need car seats. Are you bringing them with you or renting from the car hire? What is your budget for lodging?

In Tahoe we stay at the Hyatt in Incline Village. It is perfect for families. Take a look at their swimming pool area. They have a small one for toddlers, a playground and lots of room to run around. They also have a private beach at the Lone Eagle Grille. They have cabanas, lounge chairs, fire pits to roast marshmallows and volleyball court.
