Best place to stay in PEI for family + 2 kids

We are looking at spending a couple of nights on PEI in August but there are so many places to choose from I'm finding it really difficult to choose! We'd like to stay reasonably central on the island so we can get back to Moncton quickly for our train journey back to Montreal.

Could anyone recommend the best place (i.e. town and motel/hotel if possible!) to stay for a family with 2 children (5 + 7), access to great beaches and kid-friendly restaurants and activities top priority!

Thank you!

I would suggest that with young kids you consider Cavendish. It's on the Gulf (north) shore of the Island and about half-an-hour's drive from the Confederation Bridge. It's a bit busy (by PEI standards) but it has plenty of places to stay (inns, motels, cottages), lots of family-oriented activities, and access to the National Park, with its beautiful sand dunes and beaches.

Thank you KB56!

I've seen other comments in this forum which suggest that the beaches on the south side of the island have warmer water to paddle & swim in - do you know whether it is significantly cooler on the north side? (We are used to swimming off Mediterranean beaches which have lovely warm water in August, although we have also paddled in the North Sea in absolutely freezing water too!)

The water in the Northumberland Strait, on the south shore, is a bit warmer. However, we travel to PEI every August and have done so for the past ten years. We've always stayed on the north shore and we've never found the water too cold for swimming. In fact, it's quite pleasant--not as warm as the Mediterranean, but definitely not as cold as the North Sea!

Most of PEI's most popular beaches, as well as its most spectacular ocean views, are on the north shore of the Island. It's also where the National Park, famous for its sand dunes, is located. However, the south shore is quite pleasant and pretty, and depending on where you stay you could be that much closer to the Confederation Bridge and thus Moncton. Keep in mind, though, that unlike the rest of Canada nothing in PEI is very far from anything else. You could stay on the south shore and easily do a day trip to one of the north shore beaches.

That's great - thanks. We've decided on Cavendish, and will report back to Trip Advisor on our experiences!
