short stay in Cape Breton

I'm planning a short trip to Cape Breton in mid-to-late July. I'll be flying up from Florida and hooking up with a friend who'll be coming from NYC. Neither of us have been to Nova Scotia before. We'd like to do some not-too-arduous hiking and whale watching and experience some of the local culture and history, all without encountering crowds and with some time to relax, over a meal or a drink. We're love beautiful scenery and good food. Ideally, we'd like to stay in small hotels or B&Bs, though we realize our choices may be limited at this late date. We're thinking of arriving in NS on Wednesday July 18 and departing on Sunday the 22, but dates are flexible. I assume that we'll fly to Halifax and rent a car. What itinerary would you suggest?

That's great you are coming.

So depending upon your arrival time you will have at most four nights in Cape Breton. If you arrive at the airport early enough you could rent the car and drive to Cape Breton right away. Or you may be able to get as far as Pictou or Antigonish. (18th)

Then spend two more nights (19th, 20th) on the west coast of Cape Breton somewhere between Mabou and Cheticamp. This is scenic and there is Celtic and Acadian music, whale watching and great beaches. You could walk the beach and the boardwalk above it in Inverness. Just north of Cheticamp is the famous Skyline Trail.

On the 21 drive clockwise around the Cabot Trail ending up somewhere around Baddeck or Whycocomagh. There are still a few places to stay there.

Then on the 22nd drive to the airport.

So you can see this depends upon flight times.

For places to stay check www.novascotia.com. booking.com, airbnb or google bed and breakfasts and check this site: http://www.nsbedandbreakfast.com/

If you can afford it there is one chalet left at the Inn at Glenora Distillery near Mabou for your dates. The setting is lovely, the restaurant is very good and there is live music (fiddler and piano) in the evenings. https://bit.ly/2HAHTux
