Airport - car hire and getting to downtown in a hurry

Could any one give a rough timeline on how long it will take to go through st johns airport arrivals - collect luggage and pick up hire car (Pre booked with Avis) and drive to downtown/marina area?

I am missing a very big sporting event when we arrive and would like to know if there is any chance of catching any of it when we arrive at our hotel

thanks

St. John's International is a small airport. We just went through on Friday past, we were behind about half the plane and we were through immigration in about 10-15 min. When we went into baggage, some bags were already coming through, although we had carry on only.

Leaving the airport is simple, just follow the signs and you will come to Portugal Cove Road. Follow that, it will continue seamlessly into New Cove Road. Simple right turn onto Kingsbridge Road which will take you near the Marriott. You may find some traffic congestion as you approach the downtown. I estimate 15 minutes to drive downtown. The big question is how long Avis will take, hard to say as it depends on how many other customers are there at the same time.
