Vancouver Island for 8 days in September

We will be flying into Victoria on Sept 7 and renting a car for 8 days.We have been to Victoria twice so need to spend time exploring there. Plan is to take a leisurely drive throughout the Island stopping to see whatever we wish on the way. We are a couple in our early 50's. We enjoy driving, small hikes, history, great coffee shops and fantastic views. Definitely want to get to Tofino, is Campbell River worth the extra miles? Do I need to book hotels in advance, as we don't have a set itinerary that may be difficult. Any must see's on the Island and any don't bothers? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Well you might find something without a plan but you might need to increase your hotel budget if you do not book ahead. +it is not a good idea to drive to the west coast (Ucluelet) without a place to stay unless you like sleeping in your car.

you will want to check www.drivebc.ca to see how the road construction is coming along at Kennedy Lake area on the way to Ucluelet/Tofino.

Campbell River can be a destination; not sure the extra miles come into play when you are just wandering about ???

if you really want something different you should drive all the way to Telegraph Cove and include visiting Alert Bay in the plan.

Check out Parksville and the areas around it. There is an adorable little winery/farm called "Mooberry Winery" that I highly recommend. The wines are all made out of fresh berries and they have a free wine tasting. I don't even normally like wine but these are delicious and unique. The winery is attached to Little Qualicum Cheeseworks/Morningstar farm where they have a small petting zoo and make the most fabulous cheeses. (again, they have complimentary cheese tastings) It is a really fun place to visit and explore and a place to pick up some nice wines and cheeses and visit with cute animals! A real hidden gem on the island.

Also in the Parksville area is a wonderful set of falls called Englishman River Falls. It is great for a short hike, or a bigger hike. You can even just park and walk to the falls (300 meters from lot?), take a photo, and leave. or stay and hike around a bit more. It is absolutely breathtaking.

Hi Travelgirl,

It's Glenn here at the Vancouver Island Visitor Centre in the Comox Valley on the east side of the Island.

Our area offers a lot of what you seek.

Some short hikes to try:

Nymph falls trail along the Puntledge river:

https:/…nymph-falls-nature-park

The Forbidden Meadows trails in the subalpine area just west of Courtenay, easily accessible from Highway 19. Beautiful drive with views of the ocean and Coast Range on the way down:

Coffee:

There is a very active coffee culture here. Just a few ideas:

Rhodos: they roast their own beans and serve excellent food as well:

Komox Grind with their ocean view patio

In Comox , the famous Rocky Mountain Coffee Company:

On the way to Campbell River is our most unique coffee shop: Foggdukkers. Chairs right at the tide line, ocean 20 metres away, a great spot to see passing cruise ships or even maybe a whale:

History:

3 excellent local museums in the Comox Valley:

Coal mining story of Cumberland:

The Air Force museum, story of the RCAF on the island including a large outdoor static display of vintage aircraft:

Paleontology and First Nations history in the Courtenay area:

Generally in September, reservations are not required at hotels in the areas outside Tofino/Ucluelet and Victoria, unless you are looking at one of the specialty, smaller resorts or B&Bs.

Come up and see us!

Hi again, yes drop in to see us here for sure and we can help you with more local information.

Another good museum is the one in Campbell River. It has a focus on the history of logging, fishing and a great First Nations mask theatre and artifacts. Don't miss it if you like small museums.

VIVC-CV: Is there decent decaf on the island? I have had problems finding decaf in some countries. Thanks.

Lots of people drink decaf here and it's available everywhere. It's not brewed in a pot though. You have to ask for a decaf Americano. Freshly made!
