You don't say what month you will be visiting but have a look at the excellent video posted in Dave's head post.

Oh yes, I did forget. We are arriving Sat., May 5. I have watched the video and loved all the info Dave has given. Perhaps that is just what I needed.

Thank you.

You could try Tours By Locals for an independent tour with a guide. There are people who will give you personalized guided tours and cater to the cruise ships both in Nanaimo and in Victoria.

thank you, we did book a tour off the ship to a cranberry farm, though I doubt it is harvest season, I'm hoping it will be interesting. It also goes to Garden Gallery. With that and hopefully walking around off the ship dockside, or take a taxi to old town we should have a very nice day. I didn't want to miss anything that is of great interest near-by, so thought I would ask. We are from San Diego area, so are used to the waterfront. I appreciate your help. We've been to Victoria and love the area there, and really enjoyed the museum there.

Hi RomoVista_CA!

Congratulations on your decision to come to Nanaimo. You'll be arriving at our brand new Cruise Ship Terminal.

The video you've watched give you a good overview of Nanaimo.

I believe the cranberry farm is in Yellow Point which is a lovely rural area south of Nanaimo. Hopefully you can stop off at the Crow and Gate pub as it truly is one of British Columbia's finest pubs. Lovely pastoral setting.

Our downtown core is very walkable and you will easily be able to walk from the Cruise Ship Terminal to the Old City Quarter (probably 20ish minutes), back to Downtown and then along the Harbourside Walkway.

As you will be in town on a weekend (and here's hoping sunny and clear), the 'Pickle Boats' should be in operation. Spending some time on Newcastle Island Provincial Marine Park is fantastic. Especially the portion that leads from the ferry dock northeast to Kanaka Bay. Lovely views of Georgia Strait, Coastal Mountain range and Vancouver (on a clear day). Newcastle is a treasure.

The Dinghy Dock is a great spot to spend time at. Canada's only floating pub. Will have recently reopened after a big reno! If you go to Protection Island, walk up the ramp from the Dinghy Dock and to your right towards the park will be a plaque with some info about the Grey Herons nests in the trees above you!

If the Dinghy Dock is really busy, or you've run out of time, I'll pass on a secret little spot that we stop at for the view. The Lighthouse Bistro and Pub are at the north end of the Boat Basin and the building is built on stilts over the water. On the top, pub level, if you walk straight through the pub there is a small balcony with a few seats that looks over the harbour, towards the Dinghy Dock and Newcastle and Protection Islands. Great little hideaway. You can see the balcony on the right of the buidling picture on their website just below the roof overhang. Bring a jacket or sweater as even in the summer it's shaded in the afternoon and can be a bit chilly.

Keep walking past the Lighthouse Bistro and carry on to Maffeo Sutton Park to see the lagoon and the statue of our illustrious former mayor, Black Frank (Frank Ney).

On May 5th the Vancouver Island Childrens Book Festival will be on in venues downtown. Adults welcome! Tickets will be available at the Port Theatre.

And lastly, download the self-guided Nanaimo Bar Trail Guide and try some of the many varied concoctions built of the this tasty treat!

Enjoy your visit to Nanaimo and let me know if there is anything else I can help you with!

Wow! Thanks so much. I love bird watching, I feed them here at home. We love art and music. All your suggestions sound wonderful. I'm sure we'll have to come back again after our one day here, so much to do!

Thanks so much. If I can ever help you out on San Diego county info, please let me know.

There are two nesting sets of Bald Eagles on the northwest side of Newcastle Island as well as two more at Pipers Lagoon Park, one of our City's finest. You'd need a car or take Bus #2 heading to Woodgrove Mall to reach this fabulous park.

A really good spot for you to bird at is Buttertubs Marsh, about 2+ miles west of the Old City Quarter and easily reachable by cab from your cruise ship.

If you stop at the Crow and Gate there are scads of hummingbirds there!

Thanks for the offer on San Diego. A few years ago we spent a while at the Silver Strand State Park and loved the beach and San Diego!

Enjoy your visit here!
