Calgary, one or two nights

We will be stopping in Calgary en route back to Vancouver after driving through the Rockies. We will be coming in from Banff and will drop the car off at the airport prior to departure. The question??? is it worth spending two nights in Calgary as opposed to an extra night somewhere else in the Rockies, We will want to do some shopping and may consider going to the museum,I know the Zoo and a few other things are highlighted but they get mixed reviews. Trip is end of July with teenage girls who will certainly want to go to at least one mall. Question is also where would we stay, downtown though most things look as if they close after the offices close or near the airport, assume prenium parking costs with car downtown or cheaper airport araaccomodation. Read somewhere about a free train ??

With respect to your first question "is it worth spending two nights in Calgary as opposed to an extra night somewhere else in the Rockies?" that really depends on you and your interests......the Rockies are spectacular, and so it may very well be worth your while to spend an extra night in the mountains enjoying them. If you like hiking, outdoor activities, etc. you will probably want the extra night in the mountains, as they truly are majestic. You could easily spend an extra night in Banff, Lake Louise or Canmore.

On the other hand, if you really want the things that a bigger city like Calgary has to offer (i.e shopping, etc.), then the extra night in Calgary may be a preferable. It's really up to you, and basically it comes down to what your priorities are on this holiday, and what your preferences are.

I can tell you that if you want to do some shopping you will probably want to go to the Cross Iron Mills mall. It is Calgary's newest mall, and it is out at the north end of the city, fairly close to the Calgary Airport. Therefore, if your main goal while in Calgary is to go shopping then you may want to stay out at a hotel by the airport so you can easily go to that mall. Staying downtown is also another option, but as you already mentioned, the parking would be more expensive. On the other hand, there are shops/malls downtown as well, and you could walk to most places easily, or take the C-train. The route along the 7th Ave. stretch in the downtown core is free of charge, and if you take the train outside of this area (to go to the Zoo, for example) then you would need to pay a fair of $2.75 for adults, and $1.75 for youths. Here is a link to the Calgary transit website for more info on that: http://www.calgarytransit.com/
